How do Personal Digital Inquiry and Vocabulary work together?

How have you typically seen vocabulary instruction in classrooms? We know that explicit teaching of words and their meanings exposes students to new words, which is an important aim of vocabulary learning. However, in the 21st Century we need to give students opportunities to use technological tools to explore new words while also providing them choice through Personal Digital Inquiry. Over the course of the next few weeks I'm going to investigate how specific vocabulary learning can be improved through Personal Digital Inquiry. 

Disciplinary Vocabulary is an important concept to be considered as students navigate different types of reading and require background knowledge in different domains. 

Purposes and reasons for using technology in regards to vocabulary development, and incidental vocabulary learning will also be discovered through articles, websites, and reflection over lesson implementation with fourth grade students.

Activities that incorporate vocabulary learning and technology will be discussed and reflected upon before after said implementation. 

I've always been interested in learning more about vocabulary and making instruction more meaningful for students and I'm excited to see the affects of the lesson implementation process with my students. You will discover how PDI, vocabulary, and technology integration can work for you!

Resources for Vocabulary and PDI

  Resource Evaluation      As part of my implementation plan, I have chosen to use Readworks.org, Book Creator, and Google Slides. These three resources support student learning of vocabulary words and can be used with personal digital inquiry. Another reason I chose to evaluate these resources was for the back and forth nature of in-person and virtual instruction we now face as educators. Educators need to grow and adapt teaching practices as technology evolves, and these are just three valuable resources that can be easily used in the classroom and at home.       The use of digital texts through Readworks.org supports research found in Reading, Writing, and Literacy 2.0 by Denise Johnson. Reflection Over Implementation

Reflection Over Implementation When trying new things, there are always going to be successes and failures. What we learn from the successes and failures is how we learn, grow, and create new pathways for our students. I’m thankful to have gracious students who were appreciative of trying new things, even when they didn’t go according to plan. From this implementation plan I have learned that I still have a lot to learn about supporting 21st Century Literacy skills in the classroom setting. In regards to these skills, I need to allow students to explore and create with more independence, which can be difficult for teachers to do, as we have a tendency to not want to “let go of control”.
